Chillicothe Paints News Release
CHILLICOTHE, Ohio - The Chillicothe Paints have added Steve Larkin to their 2018 field staff as hitting coach, joining manager Brian Bigam for the club's 26th season.
Larkin comes to the Paints after serving in the same capacity for the West Virginia Miners during the last two seasons. Last summer, Larkin's hitters ranked second in the Prospect League in team batting average (.279) and total hits (567). In 2016, he helped the Miners win their fifth division title and their third league championship.
The Cincinnati native currently gives lessons and helps to run camps at the Reds Urban Youth Academy and spent 12 seasons playing professional baseball following a stellar collegiate career at the University of Texas. Larkin says that experience leaves a lot to draw on as a coach.
"I've been fortunate to have been around some great players in my career," said Larkin. "Anything I've learned, I just want to pass on."
Larkin says his philosophy is simple, "Play hard and have fun. That's the way I was taught."
After being selected by the Cincinnati Reds in the 40th round of the 1991 MLB June Amateur Draft out of Archbishop Moeller High School, Larkin elected to play college baseball for the Longhorns instead. Three years later, the Texas Rangers made Larkin a 10th-round pick in the 1994 draft.
In 1995, Larkin was traded by the Rangers and later made his Major League Baseball debut for the Cincinnati Reds on September 27, 1998, hitting behind his brother and eventual Hall of Fame shortstop Barry.
The Chillicothe Paints open the 2018 season on the road, May 30 at Champion City. The Paints' home opener at VA Memorial Stadium is Friday, June 1, against the Kokomo Jackrabbits at 7:05 p.m.
