San Jose Stealth News Release
SAN JOSE - San Jose Stealth and Arizona Sting fans will be in for a bit of a change this coming Friday when the teams meet in a pre-season game at Glendale Arena. The National Lacrosse League will be implementing a couple of experimental rule changes during the second half of the game.
In the third quarter only, a 25-second shot clock will be used instead of the usual 30-second shot clock.
In the fourth quarter only, teams will have to get the ball over the attacking restraining line in 10 seconds from when they take possession of the ball from their opponent. Under normal rules, teams only have to clear the midfield line within 10 seconds of taking possession. The attacking restraining line is the indoor version of the blue line used in ice hockey.
These rules are experimental only and will not be implemented for the 2005 season. The results will be studied by the league's Competition Committee at a future date. "We feel our current rules are exceptional but we are always looking at ways to add even more action and excitement to the game", said Brian Lemon, NLL vice president of operations.
"As a member of the Competition Committee, we feel it is a goal of ours to look at rules to add excitement to the game as well as try to have a game with less platooning," said Stealth General Manager and Head Coach Johnny Mouradian. "This will create more opportunities for players to play on both sides of the ball."
The Stealth will be facing off against Arizona at the Glendale Arena on Friday at 6:30 p.m. PST. This will be San Jose's last preseason test before they open the season in Calgary on Jan. 7, followed by their home opener the following night against Vancouver at HP Pavilion at San Jose.
