San Jose Stealth News Release

SAN JOSE - The San Jose Stealth (4-4) and Edmonton Rush (1-10) had to wait slightly more than two hours to start their game at HP Pavilion at San Jose because of travel problems with Edmonton's equipment.

The wait was well worth it for the Stealth and the 6,141 fans in attendance on Saturday night as the Stealth won, 12-11. The win puts the Stealth at .500 and gives them four wins, equaling the total from the 2005 season.

San Jose scored the game's first three goals within the first four minutes of the game. Derek Malawsky had assists on all three, which were scored by Luke Wiles, Jeff Zywicki and Jarret Park. Wiles, who was acquired on March 9 from the Philadelphia Wings, scored his first goal as a member of the Stealth.

Edmonton ended the first quarter scoring with goals by Randy Daly and Jim Quinlan. But the Stealth scored the first four goals of the second quarter. Zywicki, Park, Ryan Boyle and Wiles scored in the first nine minutes to give San Jose a 7-2 lead. Kevin Howard and Daly scored for the Rush to cut the deficit to 7-4. But Malawsky scored a short-handed goal at 13:40 to give San Jose an 8-4 lead at the end of the first half.

Zywicki recorded his third hat trick of the season when he scored at 14:20. But before his goal, Darren Reisig netted his second goal of the year at 9:08. Edmonton also got two goals from Trent Smalley and Howard in the quarter, but trailed 10-6 after the first 45 minutes.

Edmonton, who had lost in Phoenix on Friday night, started their comeback. Boyle's second goal at 50 seconds gave San Jose an 11-6 lead. But, the Rush scored the next four goals, two by Howard. The fourth goal came from Mat Giles at 12:48 on the power play, which put the Rush down by one, 11-10. Boyle picked up the hat trick shortly after Giles scored to give San Jose a two-goal cushion. Smalley put the Rush down by one at 14:33, but the Stealth held on for the win.

Malawsky led the Stealth scoring with six points on a goal and five assists. Malawsky and Gary Rosyski each tied a Stealth season high with five assists. Zywicki had five points (three goals and two assists). Wiles made his Stealth debut with two goals and two assists.

For the Rush, Howard led the goal scoring with four and shared the team scoring lead with five points. Tyler Heavenor had a goal and four assists. Giles had three assists.

Edmonton outshot San Jose, 47-35. Anthony Cosmo had 36 saves. The Stealth was successful on four of six power play opportunities.

RADAR BLIPS: San Jose has scored at least 12 goals in its last two games. The Stealth had scored no more than eight in their previous three. Two of San Jose's four wins have come at HP Pavilion at San Jose. The Stealth is now 3-3 against the Western Division. The 6,141 in attendance on Saturday was the second largest crowd of the season. San Jose's next game will be on March 18 against the Calgary Roughnecks at HP Pavilion. Game time is at 7:30 p.m.
