Stealth Lose At Home To Arizona, 12-10

SAN JOSE - Despite three first period goals from Derek Malawsky, the San Jose Stealth dropped their fourth straight in a 12-10 loss to the Arizona Sting before 5,069 at HP Pavilion at San Jose.

Arizona (6-4) completed a two-game sweep of a home-and-home series against San Jose (3-7). The Sting defeated the Stealth in overtime, 13-12, last night at Glendale Arena. San Jose's loss keeps them percentage points ahead of Anaheim for last place in the West Division. San Jose's winning percentage is .300, while Anaheim is 2-6, .250.

San Jose started strong by scoring the game's first four goals. Derek Malawsky had two with the others being scored by Steve Toll and Jim Moss. The Stealth was up 4-0 when Arizona's Dan Dawson recorded the Sting's first goal. The Stealth answered with goals from Derek Malawsky and Mike Regan, who scored his with 29 seconds remaining in the quarter to give San Jose a 6-1 lead.

But Arizona scored the first three goals of the second quarter as Pat Maddalena, Jason Clark and Peter Lough tallied for the Sting. The Stealth's Curt Malawsky scored two of the second quarter's next three goals to give San Jose an 8-5 lead going into halftime.

After San Jose's Matt Ogelsby scored 27 seconds into the third quarter, Arizona scored the next four goals - two coming from Peter Veltman. The fourth and game-tying goal came at 14:17 by Clark.

Arizona took a 10-9 lead early in the fourth quarter on Cory Bomberry's goal with just 31 seconds elapsed. San Jose tied the game at 5:21 on Curt Malawsky's power play goal. But the Sting got the game's last two goals from Bomberry and Lough to win the game.

The second half proved to be the game-breaker for the Stealth. Arizona outscored San Jose, 7-2 - including scoring five straight goals. The Stealth also outshot the Sting, 17-9, in the final quarter, but scored just once.

RADAR BLIPS: There were some encouraging signs from this home-and-home series against the Sting. San Jose scored at least 10 goals in both games, picking up 22. In their previous two games, the Stealth scored just 14 ... After scoring five goals in his Stealth debut last night in Arizona, veteran Ted Dowling had two assists ... All-Star Gary Rosyski was also held to two assists ... Curt and Derek Malawsky each had hat tricks for the Stealth ... Five Arizona players (Dan Dawson, Jason Clark, Peter Lough, Peter Veltman and Cory Bomberry) had two goals apiece ... Anthony Cosmo took the loss in goal for San Jose as he stopped 35 of 47 shots. Arizona's Mike Miron saved 41 of San Jose's 51 shots, including 16 of 17 in the final quarter ... The Stealth is now 1-4 at HP Pavilion. Last year, San Jose paced the National Lacrosse League with a 7-1 mark at home. The Stealth's lone home win came on Jan. 29 vs. Colorado (12-10) ... San Jose returns to action with its last home-and-home series of the season starting March 18 in Calgary and concluding March 19 in San Jose.
