Stealth Concludes Season With A 12-7 Loss To Arizona

SAN JOSE - The San Jose Stealth finished the 2006 season on Saturday night by losing to the Arizona Sting, 12-7, before 6,188 at HP Pavilion at San Jose.

The loss gives the Stealth a record of 5-11, good for fifth place in the six-team West Division. San Jose also concluded the season by losing their last seven games. Arizona, who clinched the fourth and final playoff spot in the division with a win over the Stealth last night at Glendale Arena, finished 8-8.

Arizona got the game's first goal in the first quarter as Pat Maddalena scored at 3:19. San Jose potted their first tally almost two minutes later as Darren Reisig got his fifth goal of the season at 5:07.

The Sting scored the next two goals of the game. Dan Dawson gave Arizona a 2-1 lead at 10:28.

The Sting took that 2-1 lead into the second quarter and made the score 3-1 when ex-Stealth forward Curt Malawsky scored at 1:07. The Stealth cut the deficit to 3-2 at 10:56 as Matt Alrich potted his third with assists going to Ryan Boyle and Chad Thompson.

Andrew Lazore's unassisted goal at 11:30 gave Arizona a two-goal lead at 4-2. But Boyle got his 16th goal at 12:59 to put San Jose down by one, 4-3, at the half.

The Stealth kept the game close through the third quarter. Jeff Zywicki tied the score at four with his 27th goal at 1:02. Curt Malawsky answered for Phoenix at 1:33, but San Jose got the next two goals from Derek Malawsky (2:04) and Kevin Fines' tally at 3:52 gave the Stealth their lone lead of the night at 6-5.

However, Arizona scored the next two goals. Bruce Murray (4:18) and Dawson (7:18) gave the Sting their final two goals of the third quarter to put Arizona up by one, 7-6. The Sting went on to outscore San Jose, 5-1, in the final quarter. Dawson had two of the goals, with the other Sting tallies coming from Greg Hinman, Scott Self and Maddalena. Fines had San Jose's lone goal at 5:24.

Each team had 46 shots on goal. Fines led the Stealth with two goals, while Boyle paced San Jose with four assists. Dawson potted a team-best four goals for Arizona while Craig Conn and Maddalena each had two assists. The Sting converted on two of three power play opportunities while San Jose failed to score in its two attempts.

RADAR BLIPS: Brandon Miller started in goal for San Jose and saved 29 of 37 shots. Rookie goaltender Matt Vinc made his National Lacrosse League debut by relieving Miller within the first minute of the fourth quarter for San Jose. Vinc, San Jose's first round, sixth overall, pick in the 2005 NLL Entry Draft, saved five of nine shots faced...Zywicki ended the season as San Jose's leading goal scorer with 27. Derek

Malawsky paced the Stealth with 30 assists and 50 points...The 10 penalty minutes by both teams was the fewest in a game involving the Stealth. The previous low was 18, set on Feb. 28, 2004 vs. Arizona. San Jose's six penalty minutes was their fewest ever in a game, breaking the record of 10 set three times.
