MARQUETTE - Patrick Nagorsen (NAG-or-senn) had a goal and an assist on Saturday night at Lakeview Arena, leading the Traverse City North Stars to a 3-2 victory over Marquette and into sole possession of third place in the NAHL North Division. Nagorsen's marker, which turned out to be the game-winning effort, came just 2:09 into the third period, and capped a small comeback for the second TC triumph in a row after Friday's 5-3 victory over the Rangers.
"It was a good win, and another all-around team win on the road," assessed Stars head coach Scott Gardiner. "Shives (Stefan Shively) played very well in net, and we had a solid effort again across the board."
With the win, the North Stars improved to 17-26-6, equaling their victory total from a year ago with 14 games left on the regular season slate. It also put the visitors a point up on Marquette in the chase for the third seed on the North.
On Saturday, after Nic Weight duplicated his Friday night effort by notching the first goal of the contest - this time at 2:32 of the second period - but John Foguth answered with his first lamplighter in a TC sweater at 13:40, and Nick Von Bokern registered his 10th effort of the year with :55 to play before the second intermission. Zach Hitch and Kory Kaunisto drew assists on Foguth's power play goal, while Nagorsen set up Von Bokern's marker.
Nagorsen capped the TC scoring just over two minutes into the third, while the club endured a garbage-time goal from Chris Smith to make it a 3-2 final. Shively stopped 28 of 30 shots to land his seventh victory o the 2006-07 campaign.
Traverse City and Marquette (17-24-5) wrap up their three-game series with a Sunday matinee at Lakeview Arena, which is slated for a 1 p.m. face-off.
