Huntsville Stars News Release
Minor League Baseball has established a poll on their web site in an attempt to determine the "Minor League Promotion of the Year" for the 2008 season. MiLB.com's Benjamin Hill compiled the site's top-ten promotions and has opened voting to fans.
The Huntsville Stars' World Record breaking First Pitch ceremony, which was sponsored by Cabinet NG, has been selected as one of the top-ten promotions, and could become the "Minor League Promotion of the Year."
On August 23, the Stars opened the gates of Joe Davis Stadium at 12:01am, 19 hours before the game's scheduled first pitch. A group of nearly 50 fans met the Stars staff to begin the festivities. A steady stream of fans continued through the early hours of the morning and throughout the day until the Stars and their fans set a new World Record of 11,689, shattering the previous record of 8,304.
Fans, players, umpires, politicians, Stars' staff members, and people from every walk of life participated and brought the record to Huntsville. Stars' pitcher David Welch's son, Maddux, also set a new record, becoming the youngest person ever to throw out a first pitch, at three months old.
Fans are encouraged to visit MiLB.com and cast their vote for the Stars. It is free, no registration is required, and fans can vote as many times as they like.
