Stars ousted in Game five

BOARDMAN, OH - The Mahoning Valley Phantoms scored a pair of second period goals and held the Traverse City North Stars off the scoreboard for 58 minutes, taking a 2-1 victory in the deciding contest of the teams' best-of-5 NAHL North Division semifinals on Sunday evening at the IceZone in suburban Youngtown.

The loss ends the North Stars record-setting season, a campaign in which the club set marks for regular season wins (34) and points (75), among others, and qualified for the playoffs for the first time since 2006. Traverse City forced the all-or-nothing showdown with a 4-2 win on Friday at Centre ICE.

Michael Pateras (8:47) and Robert Harrison (15:36) scored for the host Phantoms in the middle frame, and goalie Jordan Tibbett rebuffed all TC attempts until Eric O'Hearn (Traverse City, MI/TC North Stars) made the final few moments anxious ones for both squads with an even-strength goal with 2:00 left in the game. C.J. Motte (St. Clair, MI/Honeybaked AAA) worked the Stars net, stopping 24 of 26 shots.

Mahoning advances to face Team USA in the North Division Finals, with a trip to the Robertson Cup championships on the line.
