Traverse City North Stars News Release
ALPENA - "The wheels fell off."
Those words, from Traverse City North Stars head coach Scott Gardiner, aptly describe Saturday's night's 8-0 loss to divisional rival Alpena. The loss at Northern Lights Arena put an end to Traverse City's playoff hopes, which were on life support after Friday's setback in the front end of a home-and-home series at Centre ICE arena.
"We just didn't have it tonight - anything," Gardiner lamented. "And now with the playoffs out of the picture, we have to regroup and close out the season on a positive note."
Saturday's contest was fairly one-sided from the opening face-off, as the IceDiggers (35-20-4) outshot TC by a 22-5 count in the first period. Stars goalie Stefan Shively steered aside 21 of those attempts, surrendering only Jimmy McCusker's salvo at 1:50 .
The hosts opened it up in the second stanza, breaking off four goals in a span of 4:33, and added a trio of markers in the final period.
Across the Mackinac Bridge, Marquette was putting the finishing touches on a 3-2 OT win over Fargo-Moorhead, sealing the Stars' postseason fate.
Alpena outshot TC 54-28, keeping Shively busy all night, while Mike Jarboe recorded his second shutout in three games.
Traverse City welcomes in St. Louis to Centre Ice next weekend before closing out the year at Marquette.
