Traverse City North Stars News Release

JANESVILLE - Down by a pair of goals early in the third period on Sunday afternoon at Janesville Ice Arena, the Traverse City North Stars staged a late-game comeback, but ultimately came up short in a 3-2 setback in the series finale.

The Jets (9-4-2) broke up a scoreless affair 11:34 into the second period with a power play goal, but Eric Rivard (Traverse City, MI/TC North Stars) answered with a special teams marker of his own less than three minutes later to knot the outing into the second intermission. Travis White (Sterling Heights, MI/TC North Stars) and Alex Wiese (White Lake, MI/Sioux Falls USHL) assisted on Rivard's second of the year.

Janesville broke off a pair of quick goals to open the third period - the first just :32 in - before the North Stars began to rally. Traverse City (7-4-1) outshot the hosts by a 14-8 margin down the stretch, and Eric Fragoso (Novi, MI/Detroit Cath. Central HS) made it a one-score spread with 9:01 to play on a pass from Rivard.

Tyler Marble (Howell, MI/TC North Stars/Lake Superior St.) stopped 18 shots on Sunday, as the Stars converted on just one of their 10 power play chances.

"We have to find a way to score more goals," Traverse City head coach/GM Anthony Palumbo lamented. "Coming into today, we had scored four goals in our last four games, and that's just not going to cut it. That is putting a lot of pressure on our defense and goaltending."

Sunday's setback marked the first time in the 2010-11 season that the Stars have suffered back-to-back regulation defeats. They're presently tied for fifth place in the eight-team North Division, a point behind fourth-place Motor City and two behind third-place Springfield.

The North Stars return to the friendly confines of Centre ICE Arena next weekend for a pair of contests with still-winless Port Huron. The series opener against the Fighting Falcon will feature a 'Freaky Friday' costume contest, with the winner claiming a Great Wolf Lodge Family Suite, while Saturday will be the first installment of 'Saturday Night Fever' and the postgame 'Dancing with the (North) Stars' event sponsored by Z-93 FM. Both home contests face- off at 7 p.m.

WATERSTREET JOINS STARS: Former Detroit Catholic Central star Chris Waterstreet, a Traverse City tender this off-season, joined the North Stars in time for this weekend's series at Janesville. The 6-4, 225- lb. forward from Northville, Mich. spent the early part of the season with Omaha of the United States Hockey League. To make room for Waterstreet, the Stars dealt forward Matt Zaremba, to Cleveland of the Central States Hockey League.
