Minnesota United FC News Release
BLAINE, Minn. (Sept. 23, 2010) -- A late surge has given the NSC Minnesota Stars a berth in the USSF Division 2 Pro League playoffs. With a game left to play in its regular season, NSC Minnesota can finish anywhere from sixth to eighth place in the league's standings.
"To make the playoffs in our first season is a great achievement for the team, and it really says a lot about how hard our guys have fought all season," Stars head coach Manny Lagos said.
After a frustrating run that saw the club claim only two of an available 15 points from August through early September, the Stars travel to Tampa Bay seeking a fourth consecutive win and a chance at a higher seed in the postseason. At the moment, the Stars are in seventh place in the league, but they could finish a spot higher with a win and poor results in the final two games by the Montreal Impact, currently sixth, and the Puerto Rico Islanders, currently eighth.
The Stars clinched a playoff spot Wednesday night when AC St. Louis fell to Miami FC 4-2. St. Louis needed to win its final three games in order to have a chance at making the playoffs.
The Stars are guaranteed a home game during the first round of the playoffs but will not know the exact date for the match until the regular season concludes on October 3. The Stars are guaranteed to be a lower seed, meaning they will have second choice of what date to host a game in the two-match quarterfinal series. Either October 6 or 7 is most likely, but the weekend of October 9-10 is also a possibility. Ticket information will be made available after the playoff schedule is finalized.
