Stars blanked by Phantoms

Traverse City North Stars News Release

TRAVERSE CITY - Matt Quigley scored a pair of goals and goaltender Ryan Zapolski stopped all 29 shots he faced on Sunday afternoon, lifting the Mahoning Valley Phantoms to a 3-0 triumph over the Traverse City North Stars in the final installment of a three-game weekend series at Centre ICE arena.

The loss, coupled with Alpena's 4-2 win over Marquette on Sunday, dropped the Stars into second place in the North American Hockey League's North Division. After capturing the first two games of the series - a 5-4 win on Friday and a 3-2 shootout victory on Saturday - Traverse City had enjoyed a 18-hour stay in sole possession of first place. Next weekend's two-game set at Centre ICE against Alpena will give the Stars another chance to claim front- runnership.

"It's hard to beat a team three days in a row, especially a team as good as Mahoning Valley is," conceded TC head coach Scott Gardiner. "We just couldn't put one in today."

Quigley's power play effort to open the second period proved to be all the 5-6-1 Phantoms would need, but Derek Graham's power play tally in the final minute of the second period - and Quigley's empty-neter with :29 to play made it a three-goal difference.

Stefan Shively was stellar in net for a second straight night for Traverse City, collecting 29 of 31 shots and keeping the hosts in the game until the final minutes.

The North Stars (7-5-1) welcome the IceDiggers to TC for Friday and Saturday night contests, both of which face off at 7 p.m.
