San Diego Spirit News Release

The adage of tying on the road and winning at home and you will be successful has worked for years in soccer, but the San Diego Spirit have only been completing one part of the formula. The Spirit have drawn their two road matches, but have only won one of their first three home contests at Torero Stadium. To begin winning at home they will have to conquer the best team in the WUSA, the undefeated Philadelphia Charge, Sunday on during the Armed Forces Day Celebration. Fans are encouraged to come early to enjoy the pre-game festivities inside the Fun Zone. Plus, the first 2,000 fans in attendance will receive a Spirit Floppy Hat, courtesy of Viejas Outlet Centers. Gates open 90 minutes prior to kick-off. In honor of San Diego military personnel, the Spirit will host an Armed Forces Day Celebration. Fans can also take advantage of the San Diego Union-Tribune Family Four-Pack Day ticket offer, four tickets, four hot dogs and four sodas for only $44.

QUICK GLANCE RECORD: 1-2-2, 5 points,

LAST MATCH: 1-1, tie with San Jose on May 12, at Spartan Stadium

LEADING SCORER: Zhang Ouying, 3 goals, 2 assist, 8 points

INJURY REPORT: Mascaro, broken L foot, out

NEXT ON THE SLATE: v Philadelphia Charge, 5/19, 5:00 p.m. PT at Torero Stadium - San Diego meets the early-season front-runner, the Philadelphia Charge, in the first of three contests in 2002. Philadelphia was one goal away from playing in the 2001 Founders Cup in Boston, but lost to the Atlanta Beat on a dramatic overtime goal, which ended their championship dreams. Philadelphia, who may be the best overall team in league, was certainly the most overlooked team in the WUSA. Head coach Mark Krikorian has masterfully built a lineup which features both rising American and international stars. Krikorian has blended the talents of English international forward Kelly Smith, Chinese midfielder Liu Ailing, French standout forward Marinette Pichon, and the injured Chinese international midfielder Zhao Lihong with forward Mandy Clemens and midfielder Jen Tietjen (twin sister of San Diego's Margaret Tietjen) to propel the Charge to the top of the WUSA scoring chart. Returning to San Diego is goalkeeper Melissa Moore, who spent the 2001 preseason with the Spirit before being released prior to the first match. Moore was picked up by the Charge and has been a tremendous addition to the team.

SD v PHI Lifetime, 0-2-1; SD v PHI in San Diego, 0-1-0; SD v PHI in Philadelphia, 0-1-1

2001 Leading Scorer v Philadelphia - Tara Koleski, 1 goal

The Spirit flies to New York to take on the Power for the second time in the season on Saturday, May 25. Kickoff will be 1 p.m. PT. The match can be viewed live on PAX TV at 1p.m. PT. QUOTE SHEET:

Carlos Juarez on Jaime Pagliarulo's performance...

"It was the best goalkeeping performance that I have seen since the beginning of the WUSA. She was not only stopping shots, she was saving goals."

Sherrill Kester on her first career goal...

"It was a great pass from Jules and I was at the end of it and I am thankful that I had the chance to score, it was important for our team to get this result. I told the ball that it better go in after it hit the first post and I positioned myself for the rebound, but it went in instead."

THIS WEEK IN SPIRIT HISTORY:

OWN GOAL HELPS SAN DIEGO DRAW WITH ATLANTA

May 12, 2001 - San Diego traveled to Atlanta for the first installment of the "Cox Civil War" between the two WUSA operated by Cox Enterprises and Cox Communications. Briana Scurry's own goal in the 83rd minute helps San Diego tie the match and earn a point on the road.

PERSONALITY PLUS: SHANNON BOXX

On the field, the tenacious midfielder is considered a rising star in the league. She has the distinction of being the only other team captain in team history besides Julie Foudy. Boxxy's pregame ritual use to includes her having her ponytail braided. She would buy a ticket to watch Michael Jordan play NBA basketball. Her biggest pet peeve is people who are not on time. You will not catch her eating an avocado, but she will eat any kind of bread that is put in front of here.

SPIRIT RECIPES: Shannon Boxx's Mom's Chili

INGREDIENTS: 1 lb ground turkey meat, 2 cans chili beans, 1 large jar spaghetti sauce, 1 package chili seasoning, I package of sliced mushrooms.

DIRECTIONS: In a large pot, cook turkey until brown, add the remaining ingredients and cook slowly on medium heat until heated through for about one hour. For a heartier taste, simmer on a lower temperature for two hours. Tastes even better the next day.
