San Diego Spirit News Release

THE MATCH-UP - The Spirit look for their first win of the 2003 WUSA season Saturday against the New York Power. A win would bring the Spirit to the .500 mark for the eighth time in club history and would give the team wins in three games against three different head coaches from New York. San Diego has wins against former Power coaches Pat Farmer and Charlie Duccilli. Spirit head coach Omid Namazi can enjoy having his offensive firepower at full strength Saturday as the club's foreign legion of forwards Christine Latham, Julie Fleeting and Zhang Ouying have had a chance to train with the team for the past two weeks. Fleeting arrived four days prior to the opening match on April 5, while Zhang arrived the day before. Defensively, the Spirit will be probably start Joy Fawcett, who is ahead of schedule in her recovery from bone spur surgery in her right ankle on April 4. Saturday's game marks the first head-to-head battle of former teammates traded during the off-season. San Diego will face former Spirit players Carly Smolak, Shannon Boxx and Margaret Tietjen. Current Spirit defender Ronnie Fair returns to New York as an opponent for the first time after spending two seasons with the Power. Former Power midfielder Jen (Lalor) Nielsen broke a toe on her left foot on Tuesday and did not make the trip to compete against her old teammates.

SPOTLIGHT SHINES ON SPIRIT - The national spotlight shines on the Spirit Saturday as San Diego returns to play the Power before a national television audience on PAX TV. In two seasons, San Diego has compiled a 4-3-2 record in front of national TV cameras. The Spirit split two games on national television last year against the Power, winning 6-1 in San Diego and losing 2-1 in New York. San Diego will make four more appearances on PAX TV this season.
