Spirit Control Playoff Destiny

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego Spirit have gained control of their own playoff fate once again after the New York Power and San Jose CyberRays lost their matches within the last 24 hours. San Diego plays the Carolina Courage on Sunday, 5 p.m. at Torero Stadium and then concludes their season on Saturday, August 9 against the playoff bound Washington Freedom and Mia Hamm. If the Spirit wins those two matches, they will qualify for the Founders Cup Playoffs for the first time in team history with 31 points. With the results from Boston/New York and Washington/San Jose games, three teams, Atlanta (33 pts.), Boston (31 pts.) and Washington (31 pts.), have clinched a playoff spots. Four teams, San Diego (25 pts.), New York (25 pts.), Carolina (24 pts.) and San Jose (24 pts.) are battling for the fourth and final playoff berth. The Spirit controls their destiny and with a win on Sunday will eliminate New York from postseason contention.
