
Spirit, Charge to Showcase WUSA Action at Rose Bowl

The Spirit and Charge face off in their first exhibition match of the offseason. San Diego and Philly finished the season series tied at 1-1-1, with the Charge holding the edge in the lifetime series at 3-1-2. San Diego travels most of its team from the regular season, missing only a few players including Fan Yunjie, Sherrill Kester, Kim Pickup, Amy Sauer and Zhang Ouying. WUSA All-Stars Joy Fawcett, Julie Foudy and Shannon MacMillan are all expected to start for San Diego. Joining the team for the match will be guest players are L.A.-based Canadian national-teamed Isabelle Harvey, former University of Nebraska star Lindsay Eddleman and former University of San Diego standout Allie Benoit, who had been playing in Germany. The Spirit has been in camp since Sunday and will travel to Pasadena on Friday to prepare for the match. The Los Angeles Galaxy will host the San Jose Earthquakes in a regular season Major League Soccer match in the nightcap, beginning at 8:00 p.m. PT.
CHARGE NOTES...
· The Charge lost in the WUSA Semifinals for the second consecutive year.
· Mark Krikorian was named WUSA Coach of the Year.
· Goalkeeper Melissa Moore finished leading the WUSA with a 1.00 GAA, allowing 20 goals.
· The Charge defense was ranked number one in the WUSA, allowing only 1.00 goal per game.
SPIRIT NOTES...
· San Diego concluded the season with a 5-11-5 record with 20 points.
· Shannon MacMillan led the team in scoring for the second straight season with 18 points.
· The Spirit finished ranked eighth in team offense and seventh in team defense in the league.
· Julie Foudy had a personal high of five goals and 14 points in 2002.
· Defender Joy Fawcett was named the club's MVP and Defender of the Year.
