Spencer's Home Run Lifts Force
Allentown, Pa.- Shortstop Chelsea Spencer hit a two-out sixth-inning inside-the-park home run to give the Philadelphia Force a 4-3 victory over the Akron Racers. The home run earned a win for pitcher Kristina Thorson (1-2).
Spencer hit a looping line drive towards the right field line with the score tied at three. Racers right fielder Tracee McCoy dove for the ball, but missed and the ball rolled into the right field corner. The speeding Spencer never let up and was sent home by third base coach John Byrne. The University of California, Berkley, product used an outstanding slide to narrowly beat the tag at the plate.
The Force (2-6) got on the board first. Center fielder Sharonda McDonald left off the game for the Force by driving a Jamee Juarez (3-1) pitch over the first base bag and into the right field corner. The NPF rookie would end up at third with a triple. Right fielder Trena Peel would drive her in on a sacrifice fly to third. Racers third baseman and catcher both went for the pop up, and with no one covering home, the alert McDonald scored easily.
A Rocky Spencer sacrifice fly in the second inning would score Kellie Wilkerson, who leads the Force in runs scored on the season.
The Racers (7-1) would take a brief lead in the fifth inning. Center fielder Iyhia McMichael hit a three-run home run to left field to make the score 3-2.
But that lead did not last for long, as Force first baseman Jenna Hall, who was 4-for-8 in the series, blasted her second home run of the season to knot up the score.
Margo Pruis got the start in the circle for the Force. She pitched five innings and struck out two Akron batters. Thorson pitched two scoreless innings with one strikeout.
The Force will open up a six-game set with the China National Team running Thursday through Tuesday with all games at 7:05 p.m., except for Sunday which is a 1:05 p.m. start.
