Soul Fall to Valor at Home

PHILADELPHIA, PA - The Philadelphia Soul (4-4) fell to the Washington Valor (1-7) for the first time this season at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia with a score of 49-48 in front of 9,636 fans.
The Soul were off to a strong early start when Soul QB Shane Austin completed a pass to WR Darius Prince for a nine-yard touchdown which was set up by a 29-yard rush by FB Jeramie Richardson. This was Austin's first start with the Soul for the 2018 season, as he is filling in for AFL veteran QB Dan Raudabaugh. In usual Arena Football fashion, the Valor answered quickly with a five-yard touchdown to tie up the score at 7 at the end of the first quarter.
Keeping the Soul momentum, Prince continued his stellar performance when he caught a 23-yard pass from Austin in the endzone and then recovered an onsides kick, setting up a touchdown by WR Aaron Wascha. The Valor responded with a touchdown of their own, closing the Soul lead to 21-14.
The Soul continued their early dominance, as Wascha recovered a Valor onsides kick to set up another Prince touchdown, extending the Soul lead to 28-14. The Valor tried to capitalize on a golden scoring opportunity after an onsides kick recovery. However, they were stopped in their tracks thanks to an interception by last week's AFL Defensive Player of the Week, DB LaRico Stevenson. The Soul were unable to score one last time in the first half and the clock ran out with a score of 28-14.
The Valor began their comeback with touchdowns by WR Josh Reese and WR Reggie Gray. Although the Soul also had a touchdown in between by WR Darius "Money" Reynolds, the Valor were able to tie up the score at 35 by the end of the third quarter. After an exchange in rushing touchdowns by Valor QB Arvell Nelson and Soul's Wascha, the score was tied again, now at 42. The Soul completed a successful onsides kick recovery but could not capitalize on the opportunity and the drive resulted in a turnover. The Valor would take the lead with a rushing touchdown by Nelson, making the score 49-42. Although Soul's Prince scored his fourth touchdown of the game and DB LaRico Stevenson caused a forced fumble, it was not enough to secure the win. The clock ran out with a final score of Valor 49 - Soul 48.
Coming Up Next: The Soul head to Albany, N.Y. to face the Albany Empire on Saturday, June 16 at the Times Union Center. Kickoff is set for 6:00 p.m.
