Soul Dominate Blackjacks

June 16, 2019 - Arena Football League (AFL) - Philadelphia Soul News Release

PHILADELPHIA - In a game with significant playoff implications, the Philadelphia Soul (4-4) rolled to a 54-29 victory over the Atlantic City Blackjacks (3-5). With the win, Philadelphia improves to 4-4 on the season and clinches the tiebreaker over Atlantic City.

The Soul jumped out to an early lead, starting with a 6-play, 40-yard drive on the team's opening possession that was capped by an Adrian Ferns rushing touchdown. On the very next drive, the defense forced a turnover on downs at the Atlantic City three-yard line, setting up Ferns' second score of the game.

After a BJ Bunn touchdown put the Soul up 20-0 early in the second quarter, the Blackjacks finally got on the board with a 45-yard score by receiver Kendrick Ings, but it came at a cost. Hit on the play, starting quarterback Randy Hippeard was forced to leave the game with a knee injury, replaced by backup Warren Smith.

A failed Blackjacks' onside kick attempt on the ensuing kickoff gave the Soul a short field, as Ferns punched it in for his third score, matching a career high. Six of the fullback's eight rushing touchdowns this season have come against Atlantic City.

Up 27-14 entering the third quarter, the Soul quickly added to their lead after recovering a live ball on the second-half kickoff. Soul quarterback Dan Raudabaugh then found receiver Lonnie Outlaw for the one-yard touchdown and the team rolled from there. Rested in the fourth quarter, Raudabaugh finished 15-18 for 138 yards and three touchdowns. His 83.3% completion percentage was his best in a game since July of 2017.

Defensively, the Soul forced a season-high three turnovers on downs, three sacks (two by Thomas Dover and one by Sean Daniels), and an interception (by Dwayne Hollis) as both Hippeard and Smith were under pressure the entire game.

The Soul's eighth straight win over a Ron James-coached team means Philadelphia has clinched the season series and the tiebreaker over Atlantic City. Next up, the team will travel to Columbus to take on the Destroyers on Saturday, June 22 at 7 pm.
