Philadelphia Soul News Release
PHILADELPHIA, PA - The Philadelphia Soul (3-3) fell to the Baltimore Brigade (5-1) for the second time at Royal Farms Arena in Baltimore, MD with a score of 54-35 in front of 5,035 fans. Soul rookie QB Greg McGhee made his first career start, filling in for veteran QB Dan Raudabaugh.
Although the Soul defense appeared to start strong, the Brigade got the scoring started early when QB Randy Hippeard completed a 26-yard pass to WR Quentin Sims for a Brigade touchdown. Just when the Soul thought they could even the score, the Brigade extended their lead after a turnover on downs. Hippeard completed a five-yard touchdown pass to OL Jordan McCray, giving the Brigade an early lead of 14-0.
The Soul answered with a touchdown thrown by QB McGhee and completed by WR Darius "Money" Reynolds, cutting the Brigade's lead 14-7 to end the first quarter. The Brigade were not going to let the Soul keep the momentum for long, as they came back with yet another touchdown, this time by WR Milton Williams, making the score Brigade 20 Soul 7.
After McGhee's first interception of his AFL career, the Brigade took this defensive opportunity to score another touchdown, as FB Rory Nixon carried for one yard into the endzone, giving them a 27-7 lead. Keeping their energy going, the Brigade's WR Quentin Sims scored off a net recovery from a kickoff to the Soul for another Brigade touchdown, giving them a lead of 33-7. The next Soul drive was off to a shaky start when McGhee was sacked by Brigade DL Damien Borel. However, the Soul were able to fit in one final touchdown in the first half when McGhee found rookie WR Aaron Wascha in the endzone, making the Soul down 33-14 going into halftime.
The Soul came out strong after halftime, putting together a successful scoring drive. After two critical completions to Soul star WR Darius Prince, McGhee scored on a one-yard carry, making the score Brigade 33 Soul 21. The Brigade responded with the first points scored in the fourth quarter when FB Nixon dove over the pile for a touchdown, giving them a 40-21 lead.
As the Soul, specifically Darius Prince, moved the ball down the field, McGhee found Wascha in the endzone, tightening the score to Brigade 40 Soul 28. The Brigade would, once again, extend their lead with a two-yard touchdown carry by WR Lamark Brown to make the score 47-28 in favor of the Brigade.
On the ensuing Soul drive, Brigade's WR Brown would intercept McGhee for a pick six. Although Soul's McGhee rushed 45 yards for a touchdown, setting the AFL single-game high for rushing this season, the Brigade would still come out on top with a final score of 54-35.
