PHILADELPHIA (January 31, 2012) - The Philadelphia Soul inked kicker Phil Marfuggi (6'0, 200, Clemson) after concluding a successful open tryout on Saturday. The open tryout drew 285 prospective players to the Philadelphia Eagles' NovaCare Complex in South Philadelphia.

"Phil really impressed the coaching staff during the tryout," said Soul head coach Doug Plank. "We are counting on him to restore consistency to our kicking game."

Marfuggi, a New Jersey native, spent the 2011 season with the Iowa Barnstormers. Appearing in three games during the 2011 season, he was successful in 15 out of 22 extra point attempts. Prior to joining the Barnstormers, Marfuggi was a member of the Harrisburg Stampede (2010) of the American Indoor Football Association. With the Stampede he recorded 94 kickoffs with 49 touchbacks, while scoring a total of 129 points for the team on the season.

Prior to joining the Stampede, Marfuggi was drafted in the first round of the 2007 Major League Soccer (MLS) Supplemental Draft and was signed by the New England Revolution. Before being drafted by the Revolution, Marfuggi was a highly-acclaimed soccer player earning All-American honors at Clemson University (2003-06). His collegiate honors included being named team MVP and Captain in 2006 and First Team All-American by Soccer America and soccertimes.com in 2005

The day was also highlighted by those who attended to view the tryout: current Soul Co-Majority Owner and former Philadelphia Eagles' quarterback Ron Jaworski, as well as current players on the Soul's roster including All-Arena wide receiver Donovan Morgan. Two players signed from the previous tryout held back in October, Alfonso Hoggard and Jesse Cooper, were also in attendance.

"This was a truly special day," said Plank. "Not only did we draw a very large number of players but the level of talent exceeded all expectations. It was an honor to have Ron attend the tryout and demonstrate his passion for this team. I want to make sure the entire Soul organization receives recognition for their handling of the large amount of athletes that showed up."
