San Diego Sockers News Release
The San Diego Sockers improved to 3-0 on the season with an 8-4 victory over the California Cougars at the Del Mar Arena on Saturday night. Majell Aterado scored back-to-back goals late in the 3rd and early in the 4th quarter to break open a close game, and Kraig Chiles added two goals and an assist to pace the Sockers offense.
Aterado, a former Cougar the past two seasons, tallied on a Chiles assist with fourteen seconds remaining in the third quarter to open up a 6-4 lead. He followed with a power play goal off Chiky Luna's feed to give San Diego all the breathing room they would need for their 3rd victory of the year.
"It felt great, especially against my former team," said Aterado, "I knew I needed to step up and play a better game and it was good to help out."
After jumping out to a 4-2 lead after the first quarter on goals by Chiles, Scott Martin, Paul Wright and Anthony Medina, the Sockers saw California (0-3) come back with a determined and physical effort. Goals by Omar Martinez and Adam Owens tied the game at 4-4 at the 9:37 mark of the third quarter. Chiles answered back on the power play, taking an assist from Wright (goal, two assists) and potting it behind California keeper Jesus Molina for the go-ahead goal.
San Diego finished their scoring on a shootout goal from Luna. The shootout attack was awarded after a hard tackle on Wright inside the penalty area.
"Our energy wasn't good all week in practice but luckily we came out with our mind right," said Luna, "It's always great to come out in front of our home crowd, we can't let them down."
The game was watched by a Thanksgiving weekend crowd of 1,929. The Sockers (3-0 PASL-Pro) next host the Louisville Lightning on Saturday, December 4th at 6:15pm.
