Slaon, Nogueira Honored for Play

(Westport, Conn., March 13, 2003) – Philadelphia KiXX forward Kevin Sloan and Milwaukee Wave goalkeeper Victor Nogueira have been named the Major Indoor Soccer League's Offensive and Defensive Players of the Month for February, the League announced on Thursday.

Offensive Player of the Month:

Sloan tied Kansas City's Nick Corneli and San Diego's Carlos "Chile" Farias for the League scoring lead in February with 19 points in six games. Sloan scored a 3pg and seven 2pgs and added a pair of assists to average 3.2 points per game during the month.

The 37-year-old scored at least two points in all of his February games, including two five-point performances (on February 1 against Harrisburg and February 8 against Dallas). Sloan also became the 12th player in League history to score 1,000 career points on February 8 versus the Sidekicks.

For the season, Sloan is second on the team and tied for 20th in the League with 58 points in 24 games. The native of Washington, D.C., is tied for the team lead with 25 goals. Sloan, who played in the 2003 MISL All-Star Game on March 9 in Milwaukee, wins League honors for the first time this season.

Defensive Player of the Month:

Nogueira went 4-0 with an 8.50 points against average in February, continuing one of his all-around best seasons in an incomparable career. The 43-year-old keeper led the League in wins and PAA during the month, and was third with a .757 save percentage (53 saves on 70 shots).

Nogueira allowed no more than 10 points in any of his February appearances, and surrendered a total of only 17 goals in 246 minutes of play. He allowed eight points in 66:59 on February 5 against Cleveland, leading the Wave to a 10-8 overtime victory.

For the season, Nogueira is 23-3 with a 7.82 points against average, and leads the League in PAA, wins, and save percentage (.767). He also won the League's monthly defensive honors for October 2002 and January 2003, and has earned Defensive Player of the Week honors four times this season. The native of Mozambique has won or shared the League's Goalkeeper of the Year Award seven consecutive times and played in his eighth All-Star Game on March 9.
