Slam, WWU Alumni to Meet in Exhibition Game

BELLINGHAM, Wash. - The Bellingham Slam will be returning to the court for at least one game this spring, as the team is organizing an exhibition contest to take place in Bellingham on Sunday, May 17.
The Slam's opponent for the game will be a Western Washington University alumni squad comprised of former Viking players from the past decade. With several players on the Slam being WWU graduates themselves, this is sure to be a fun, one-of-a kind event.
The game, set for 3 p.m. on May 17 at Carver Gymnasium, is taking place during the university's annual Back to Bellingham alumni weekend and will also follow the end-of-season awards banquet for the WWU Men's Basketball team, which will draw a number of former athletes back to campus.
The Slam, which had announced in February that it would not be participating in a traditional season in 2015, should have the majority of last season's roster in place for the exhibition, led by player-coach Tyler Amaya who helped guide the Slam to its third straight International Basketball League title in 2014. Center Austin Bragg, who played for Bellingham last season after graduating from WWU and went on to win the IBL championship game's Most Valuable Player award, is also expected to participate.
The WWU alumni side is expected to feature center Anye Turner and guard Mark Hopkins, both of whom completed their senior seasons of eligibility this past spring. Also anticipated to suit up are forwards Rory Blanche, who helped the Vikings capture the NCAA Division-II National Championship in 2012, and Lukas Henne, who starred for the team from 2003 to 2007, among others. Former WWU assistant coach Bob Hofstetter will guide the team from the sidelines.
Tickets for the game cost $8 for adults and $5 for seniors. Children age 12 and under, as well as all WWU students, are free. Parking is free on the WWU campus during the game.
