June 21, 2013 - International Basketball League (IBL)
Bellingham Slam News Release

BELLINGHAM, Wash. "" The Bellingham Slam came out on top of their much-hyped rivalry game against the Vancouver Volcanoes, 126-104, on Friday night at Whatcom Pavilion.

The win was the Slam's 20th consecutive home victory spanning two seasons, setting a new franchise record.

Bellingham (13-2) has extended their first place lead over Vancouver (12-4) to two games with their win tonight. The game was a must-win and Bellingham played like it tonight. With only three games left in the regular season, the Slam has strengthened its chances at claiming first place and a first-round bye in July's IBL Championship tournament.

Tonight's game was all about runs, and the Slam had two key runs that paved the way to victory tonight. Bellingham had a 20-9 run in the first quarter, and a 19-6 run in the second to gain a 22-point lead heading into halftime, when they led 70-48.

In the second half, the Slam had to fend off a desperation effort from the Volcanoes to secure the victory.

Guard Jacob Stevenson led Bellingham with 30 points. In addition, Blake Poole, Drew Ready, and Evan Matteson each contributed double-doubles in the winning effort. Poole's effort was notable as he finished with 22 points and a game-high 16 rebounds, and also added a pair of blocks and a season-high three season-high three steals.

Chehales Tapscott and Mike Ward both led Vancouver with 22 points. Tapscott also grabbed 13 rebounds to complete a double-double for the night.

The Slam get little opportunity for rest as they travel to Oakland, Calif. on Saturday to face the East Bay Pit Bulls. The team returns to Whatcom Pavilion for their final home game against the Salem Sabres on June 29. Tip-off is set for 7pm.
