Sky Blue FC News Release
San Francisco, Calif. (Friday, April 16, 2010) - In Women's Professional Soccer (WPS) action this Saturday night, Sky Blue FC (1-0-0) will look to pick up three points when the team plays a road match with FC Gold Pride (0-1-0) at 10:00 p.m. EST. The game is the first road contest for Sky Blue FC this season, while it will be the first home game on the year for FC Gold Pride.
"I don't see the traveling as having that much of an effect on our play come game time," Sky Blue FC head coach Pauliina Miettinen said of the nearly 3,000-mile flight the team took for this match. "The team has looked very sharp over the past two days, and I am confident that we will perform to the best of our ability."
One player on the opposing side who will look to cause problems for Miettinen and the Sky Blue FC back line is FC Gold Pride forward Marta, who is the reigning WPS Most Valuable Player and four-time FIFA Player of the Year.
"Marta is obviously a player who we must take into consideration," Miettinen commented. "She can be a dangerous player, and we will look to prevent her from being able to play to her strengths."
Making her second straight start between the pipes for Sky Blue FC will be goalkeeper Karen Bardsley, one week after posting a 1-0 shutout win over the Chicago Red Stars (0-1-0). The English National Team netminder recorded five saves in that contest, and Miettinen says that type of outing came as no surprise to her.
"Karen is tall, and she clearly has the ability to dominate the box," she remarked. "I had no doubt in my mind that she could put forth a performance like she did last weekend, and I expect the same of her tomorrow night."
Saturday night's game will be the first of two consecutive road match-ups for Sky Blue FC, with the team traveling to Chicago next weekend for a rematch with the Red Stars.
May 1st marks the return of Sky Blue FC to Yurcak Field when it will host FC Gold Pride. On an extremely limited basis, fans can purchase an exclusive ticket package to have their photo taken with Marta and Sky Blue FC forward Rosana. To purchase today, call 1-888-SBFC-TIX.
