Mat-Su Miners News Release
ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Entering Friday, the Mat-Su Miners and Anchorage Bucs had combined for a total of 47 runs in the previous three meetings between the two programs.
Friday's game would prove to be a different affair.
Mat-Su pitcher Trent Shelton continued a dominating summer in the Alaska Baseball League, holding the Bucs to one run in a 2-1 road victory at Mulcahy Stadium.
"Shelton was fantastic, he pounded the zone all night," Miners head coach Ben Taylor said. "He threw strike one and competed well with his secondary pitches. It was the effort we needed."
Shelton allowed five hits and fanned four batters in 7.2 innings of work. The left-hander has surrendered just two runs in 20 innings of work in the Alaska Baseball League.
"I was getting ahead with the fastball and throwing a lot of changeups too," Shelton said. "When I was getting to two strikes, (Matt) Greely was calling good pitches and Cosgrove was back there blocking well. Everything was clicking."
The Mat-Su offense struck in the top of the fifth inning, when designated hitter Michael Donadio took advantage of a throwing error from the Bucs defense to grab an early 1-0 lead for the Miners.
Leftfielder Garrison Schwartz added another run for Mat-Su in the top of the seventh, scoring on a wild pitch that bounced past Bucs catcher Chad Reibenspies.
Anchorage responded with a solo home run over the right field fence from rightfielder Steven Sensley to cut the deficit to one. But Miners closer Jordan Floyd shut the door with a scoreless ninth inning to earn the save.
"This was a huge win for us," Shelton said. "We got a lot of hits out there and had great defense on the field. It was a good team win."
Schwartz and shortstop Josh Bissonette led the Mat-Su offense with two hits apiece, while Donadio added a double down the left field line in the fifth inning.
The win improves the Miners record to 10-6 and drops the Bucs to 10-10 on the summer.
"We're just taking it one day at a time," Taylor said.
Mat-Su returns to Mulcahy Stadium on Saturday night at 7 p.m. for the team's third consecutive meeting with the Bucs.
