Seven Former Legends Invited to Royals Spring Training
January 26, 2015 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Lexington Legends News Release
Seven former Lexington Legends - Scott Alexander, Christian Binford, Cam Gallagher, Hunter Dozier, Bubba Starling, Miguel Almonte and Raul Mondesi - are among 23 non-roster invitees to major league spring training with the Legends' parent club, the American League champion Kansas City Royals.
All seven were with the Legends for part or all of the 2013 season, the Legends' first as a Kansas City affiliate.
Alexander, a left-handed pitcher, was a sixth round draft choice by Kansas City in 2010. Binford was chosen in the 30th round in 2011, Gallagher in the second round in 2011 and Dozier in the first round in 2013.
Starling was the Royals' first-round pick and fifth overall pick in the 2011 draft. Almonte and Mondesi, both natives of the Dominican Republic, were signed as non-drafted free agents, Almonte in 2010 and Mondesi in 2011.
Terrance Gore, who played for the Legends in 2013 and saw action with the Royals in the 2014 World Series, is on Kansas City's 40-man roster.
"It's always a pleasure seeing former Legends getting an opportunity to make "ËThe Show,'" said Legends CEO Andy Shea. "Whether it's the traditional path taken by Hunter Pence or Jose Altuve, or the non-traditional path of Terrance Gore, who made it to the World Series as a pinch-runner - it's always fun!"
Pitchers and catchers will report to the Royals' spring training headquarters in Surprise, Arizona February 19. Workouts for pitchers will begin the following day. The remainder of the squad will report on Tuesday, February 24 and will begin workouts on Wednesday, February 25.
The 2015 Legends open the home season Thursday, April 16 against West Virginia at Whitaker Bank Ballpark. For more information, call 859 422-7867 or visit www.lexingtonlegends.com.
