San Diego Seals News Release

The San Diego Seals are proud to announce team captains for the 2021-22 season, led by veteran defenseman Brodie Merrill who returns for his third season with the 'C' on his chest. Defenseman Cam Holding will again serve as assistant captain for the upcoming campaign. Forward Wesley Berg receives the honor of being named an assistant captain for the first time in his career.

"Our captains embody and represent the essence of what it means to be a San Diego Seal on and off the field," said General Manager and Head Coach Patrick Merrill. "We're fortunate to have a locker room full of guys who team-first, selfless and ultra-competitive. We believe a successful culture starts with surrounding yourself with good people. We couldn't be more proud to have Brodie, Cam and Wesley leading our team this season."

Brodie Merrill was named the first captain in Seals history before the team's inaugural season. He's appeared in 28 games for San Diego, recording 26 points, 216 loose balls and 32 caused turnovers. On February 22, 2020, Merrill scooped up his 2,518th career loose ball to become the NLL's all-time leader in the category. The future Hall of Famer is a league-record three-time NLL Transition Player of the Year recipient (2009, 2010, 2017) and a nine-time NLL All-Pro selection.

"I'm honored to continue to lead this team," said Merrill of his captainship. "I hope to build on what we accomplished and continue to move towards our goal of bringing a championship to San Diego. I'll do my best to lead by example and support my teammates."

Named an assistant captain ahead of the team's inaugural season, Holding has appeared in every game in team history. He led the Seals in loose balls the previous two seasons, and added nine goals. The defenseman was selected by San Diego in the 2018 NLL Expansion Draft.

Berg led the team in points and ranked second in goals scored in his first year in San Diego. Before being traded to the Seals, he played three seasons with the Calgary Roughnecks where he was an NLL Rookie of the Year finalist. The righty was drafted fourth overall in the 2015 NLL Entry Draft. Berg played college lacrosse at University of Denver and was part of the 2015 National Championship squad.
