San Diego Seals News Release
The San Diego Seals win-streak came to a halt on Saturday night as the team dropped a one-goal game to the Albany FireWolves at Pechanga Arena. It was a gritty, back-and-forth affair that came down to the final few seconds that ended with the FireWolves on top 13-12.
"It came down to the details," said General Manager and Head Coach Patrick Merrill. "It was a battle out there. We needed to be better in a lot of ways, but there's no excuses. We're going to regroup and get ready for the game on Friday."
Forwards Wesley Berg and Austin Staats led the Seals offense with four goals each. Staats' six points on the night were highlighted by a pair of crowd-dazzling, behind-the-back goals. Rookie forward Tre Leclaire added a team-high five assists, while Jeremy Noble netted his 99th career goal.
"We all know how Austin plays," continued Merrill. "He steps up when we need him to, he makes big plays and finds a way to score. Our offense was a little scrambly tonight. We need to get back to our game plan, move the ball better and play our style. That's when we're the most successful."
Goaltender Frank Scilgiano stayed consistent in net stopping 35 shots on the night. Assistant captain Cam Holding made his return to the lineup and made an instant impact, netting the first goal of the contest. The Seals defense held the game close all night with big hits, gritty plays and caused turnovers.
"We need to have a short memory," continued Merrill. "We'll learn from this one and move our focus onto next week. We have a short week and we'll need to be ready for a big matchup with Calgary."
The Seals will continue their home-stand on Friday, March 4 when the Calgary Roughnecks make their second and final trip to San Diego. The Seals were victorious in the first two matchups against the West Division foe and will look to sweep the season series. San Diego will wear their alternate black uniforms in the contest for Blackout Night at Pechanga Arena. Reserve your seats today at SealsLax.com.
