USL United Soccer League Championship

Seahorses 2-0 over Blitzz

June 6, 2004 - United Soccer League Championship (USL) News Release

LA MIRADA, Calif. - - Forward Jordan Jones scored two goals and goalkeeper Eric Reed posted his first shutout of the season to lead the Southern California Seahorses soccer team to a 2-0 victory over the Utah Blitzz on Saturday night at La Mirada High School's Goodman Stadium.

Jones, a former Azusa Pacific University standout, scored in the 20th and 59th minutes. The first goal came off a rebound of a shot by teammate Jake Ward. The second goal was unassisted, coming on a hard shot from 25 yards out that flew past Utah goalkeeper Chad Sackett into the upper right corner of the net.

Meanwhile, Reed, the Seahorses goalkeeper, was keeping busy. He faced 19 shots on goal by Utah and made nine saves, several on shots from point-blank range. Reed, a UCLA player from Mission Viejo, received some help in the first half from defender Beau Lawson. Reed moved out to stop a shot by Utah forward Jorge Estrada in the 13th minute, but the shot went over Reed's head and was sailing into the goal before Lawson knocked the ball out with a bicycle kick at the goal line.

The victory for the Seahorses (4-5-0) avenged a 2-1 defeat at Utah (4-4-3) a week earlier.

The Seahorses play in the United Soccer Leagues' Premier Development League. The Blitzz play in the USL's Pro Soccer League. Both leagues are national leagues preparing players for Major League Soccer.

The Seahorses go on the road Sunday to play the San Diego Gauchos of the Pro Soccer League at 2 p.m. at Southwestern College in San Diego. The Seahorses return home Saturday, June 12, against the California Gold of the Pro Soccer League, at La Habra High School (7:30 p.m.).
