San Diego Loyal News Release

SAN DIEGO - San Diego Loyal SC allowed a first half goal in a 1-0 loss against visiting Memphis 901 FC Saturday night at Torero Stadium.

Rodrigo Da Costa scored for Memphis in the 23rd minute of the interconference USL Championship match. It was SD Loyal's fourth-consecutive home match and its third in eight days. The busy August schedule continues for the club as it will conclude its five-match homestand next week against New Mexico United. The Western Conference clash will be televised nationally on ESPN2.

Memphis, a team that spent most of the night bunkered in its own territory, took the 1-0 lead when Da Costa put back a Graham Smith shot that SD Loyal goalkeeper Koke Vegas blocked at his line. Smith's attempt ricocheted to a wide open Da Costa, who fired in his left-footed shot into the net.

SD Loyal pressured Memphis with its attack throughout the match, creating some early scoring chances. One of them included Adrien Perez sprinting into the penalty box from the right side. The speedy forward was taken down by Memphis' Akeem Ward in the box and a penalty kick was whistled. Joe Corona took the penalty kick but his shot was blocked by Drew Romig as the Memphis goalkeeper dove to his left.

SD Loyal was shutout at home for the first time this season. Despite the visitors' strategy of sitting back to defend, Head Coach Nate Miller continued to send his lines up in the second half. After making a handful of substitutes, SD Loyal moved the ball and kept possession but couldn't convert on several scoring chances, including one that had Alejandro Guido sliding after a long Charlie Adams cross in the six-yard box.

SD Loyal will now shift its focus to New Mexico United next weekend (Saturday, Aug. 19, 6:30 p.m.) before hitting the road on Aug. 26 against Rio Grande Valley FC. Tickets to the match against New Mexico are on sale at sdloyal.com/tickets.
