
SD Loyal Adds Douglas Martinez on Loan from MLS Club Real Salt Lake

San Diego - San Diego Loyal SC (SD Loyal) announced today it has acquired Douglas Martinez on loan from Major League Soccer side Real Salt Lake, pending league and federation approval.
"Douglas is an extremely talented and experienced player at the MLS level, USL level and also with his national team," said Landon Donovan, EVP of Soccer Operations and Manager.. "We are extremely fortunate to have a player of this quality join our club and he undoubtedly help our attack as we move into the final stretch of the season."
Martinez joins SD Loyal as it heads into a Week 19 match against Sacramento Republic in a Pacific Division matchup Saturday Aug. 28. The 24-year-old forward comes from Real Salt Lake after spending time with USL club Real Monarchs where he started in seven matches, playing 630 minutes. The Olanchito, Honduras native scored two goals this season, including one against SD Loyal earlier this month. He also has a pair of assists in the 2021 USL Championship season.
The nifty forward made his pro debut in his native Honduras with CDS Vida in 2013 and worked his way to the United States, reaching the USL Championship on loan with New York Red Bulls II in 2017. He went on to sign with Real Monarchs in 2019 where he was impressive enough to be called to Major League Soccer's Real Salt Lake. He led the Monarchs in scoring with 17 goals in 25 games, the fifth highest in the USL Championship. In his 2,002 minutes with the club he had seven assists, including one assist and one goal during the Monarchs title-winning season. Martinez made one appearance for RSL, making his MLS debut in the starting eleven on September 12 against San Jose. Martinez became the eighth player to sign for RSL after first signing with the Monarchs. At the MLS level, Martinez scored three goals in 10 starts and 19 total starts for 924 minutes in 2020.
Martinez also has international experience. He was part of the Honduras national team playing in the CONCACAF Nations League in which he scored against Trinidad & Tobago in October 2019. He was also part of the Honduras Under 20 and U-23 national team system from 2016-2019.
