Scoring Burst Lifts City Islanders to 3-0 Win

June 26, 2004 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Penn FC News Release

New Rochelle, NY – The Harrisburg City Islanders tore off three goals in an eight-minute span at the end of the first half and Michael Behonick posted a clean sheet with only two saves in net as the Harrisburg City Islanders registered a 3-0 victory over the Westchester Flames in New Rochelle, NY, on Saturday night. With their first two-game winning streak, Harrisburg improves to 6-4-2 (20 points) and remains within shouting distance of first-place Pittsburgh (9-2-1, 28 points) in the Pro Soccer League's Atlantic Division, while Westchester drops to 5-3-2 (17 points).

Matt Tanzini opened the brief but devastating goal-scoring barrage in the 37th minute, turning a Pete Shellenberger feed into his third goal of the season. All three of Tanzini's goals have been game-winners, and including his game-winning assist against Northern Virginia on June 23, he has been involved in four of Harrisburg's six decisive goals this season. This one secured the club's first road win since their season-opening 5-2 victory over Northern Virginia on April 17.

Andy Guastaferro and Derek Potteiger followed with scores of their own (both unassisted) before the whistle ended the first half. Guastaferro struck in the 43rd minute, tallying his second goal in four games with the team, and Potteiger (whose start marked an impressively quick comeback from a knee injury sustained on June 18) notched his second goal of the year in the 45th minute.

Westchester, a perennially competitive club considered one of the PSL's better sides, never recovered from the onslaught, thanks mostly to one of the best defensive performances of the season for Harrisburg. The Islanders allowed only nine shots to the Flames' potent offense, only two of which had to be dealt with by Behonick, who was acquired on loan from the A-League's Charleston Battery last week. He recorded the fourth shutout of the year for Harrisburg.

Notes: The Islanders are now 6-1-2 when scoring the first goal of a game...Harrisburg has outscored its opponents 11-0 over their last three wins...Pete Shellenberger, Moffat Oduor, and Matt Crist all received cautions in the match...Harrisburg now has off until Saturday, July 10, when the Premier Development League's South Jersey Barons visit Skyline Sports Complex. Kickoff is at 7:35 p.m.
