Schaumburg Flyers News Release

SCHAUMBURG, IL- The Schaumburg Flyers continued to make a run at a second-half playoff spot, signing DH-1B A.J. Leday to a contract on Tuesday. The Southern California resident started the 2002 season in Winnipeg before swinging the bat for Allentown in the Northern League-East from June 29-August 4. Leday, 29, batted .286-2 HR-22 RBI in 27 games at Allentown before being granted free agency. He is expected to be in the Schaumburg starting lineup tonight when the Flyers play the St. Paul Saints at Midway Stadium in St. Paul, MN. Due to the Flyers' loss to St. Paul on Monday, they sit 5.5 games behind first place Joliet in the Northern League-Central's South Division's second-half race. The Flyers have 19 games remaining on their regular season schedule.

Leday brings additional N.L. experience to the table, having played 45 games for Winnipeg in 2001 during their playoff drive. Leday hit an astounding ..427 in that period with 9 HR-46 RBI. He earned Northern League-Central Player of the Month honors last August. Only lack of plate appearances kept Leday from capturing the N.L. Central batting title. He also played with Reynosa of the Mexican League and Class AA Arkansas in the Anaheim system last season. Leday's affiliated baseball career also includes time spent with the San Diego and Houston organizations from 1998-2000. Leday's first Northern League stop was at Duluth-Superior where he hit 20 home runs in 1996, and helped Duluth win a Northern League title in 1997. Leday played his college ball at Miami of Ohio. He began his pro career in 1995 playing in the Rookie-level Pioneer League. He went on to play for the Cincinnati chain at Class A Charleston (WV) in 1996.
