Frisco Thunder News Release
LAKE CHARLES, La. (May 31, 2008) --The highlight of Troy Esprit's day was probaly was watching his son play shortstop when his team they won their little league baseball championship Saturday in Beaumont, Tex.
The astute among you can probably gleam how the Frisco Thunder did that night against the Louisiana Swashbucklers.
The final score was 76-17. It probably could have been a little closer and the scary thing is that it could have been a lot worse. It what was you sort of expected from a veteran Louisiana team that's been together longer than most boy bands and sports an unbeaten record this season and a home winning streak that's now in the 20s against a Frisco team with a rookie quarterback making his first career indoor start, a patchwork offensive line and overall banged up from injuries.
This one got away from the Thunder in the second quarter when Louisiana did what it does best -- capitalize. Two returns for touchdowns and two deep Alvin Bartie touchdown passes on the type of toss you know will go for six even before the ball begins spiraling downward turned what was a pretty good 7-0 game into 42-0.
Frisco made a little run -- ten unanswered points and three consecutive scores at the outset of the second half and for a moment the game got really competitive when the Swashbuckler defense elevated the smack talk when the Thunder had the ball inside the LA 5 midway through the third period.
LA's defense stuffed consecutive scoring threats, and then the defending Intense Football League champs scored the final 27 points to end the game and get everyone out of the Lake Charles Civic Center in less than three hours.
``If we play them again, it won't be anything like this,'' said Thunder wide receiver Daron Lawrence, whose eight catches for 113 yards was one of Frisco's bright spots. ``We're better than this.'' Three of his four interceptions came after the game was out of hand. Early trouble with the center exchange helped keep the Thunder from not scoring a touchdown in a half for the first time in team history.
The Thunder defense held its own in the first quarter, registering two stops that include Shaylon Carter's third interception in as many games. Blake Timmons also had a pick in the second half. Bartie finished 12 of 25 for 153 yards and five touchdowns while rushing for another. Shawn Piper and Raymond Harris each caught two scores. Dennis Hopovac put the Thunder on the scoreboard four seconds before halftime with an 18-yard field goal, his 16th of the season. Frisco (6-6) returns to action June 12 in Alaska against the Wild (4-6).
