San Jose Stealth News Release
Denver, Colo.-- The Stealth (1-2) possibly faced their toughest task of the season, playing a quick turn around game against an undefeated team in front of a hostile and voracious crowd. The Stealth couldn't overcome the odds and lost to Colorado Mammoth 11-6. The Stealth, after a emotional 15-13 loss to Calgary in San Jose, sacked out for about four hours before catching an early morning flight to Denver. When they got to Pepsi Arena, they were greeted by a sellout crowd of 18,007 excited fans. The circumstances put the Stealth in a fighting mood and it cost them in the penalty box. The Stealth's two first-half goals were short-handed, while the Mammoth scored all five of their first-half goals on power plays. Another fight broke out just before the half, Mammoth Jamie Shewchuk and Stealth Andrew Guindon were in the penalty box to open the second half. Colorado then extended its lead in the third quarter, beating the Stealth while playing five-on-five - scoring three third-quarter goals to the Stealth's one goal. The quarter was highlighted by a collision between Colorado goalie Gee Nash and Stealth defensiveman Steve Holmes, which further inflamed the crowd. In the second half, the undefeated Mammoth was too talented to allow a San Jose comeback, which was a shame for Stealth goalie Anthony Cosmo, who played a whale of a game. By the end of the third quarter, the Mammoth had poured 47 shots on Cosmo and scored only nine goals. He even saved one shot on his back, after getting knocked to the floor. The Stealth, meanwhile, could only muster 19 shots on goal through three quarters against the Mammoth's towering defense. Colorado extended its lead to 11-6, when Cosmo got caught out of the goal and took a spill trying to retreat. The Stealth fell to 1-2, while Colorado is now 4-0.
