San Diego Spirit's Shannon MacMillan Wins MET-Rx Player of the Week

SAN DIEGO - San Diego Spirit forward Shannon MacMillan has been selected as the league's MET-Rx Player of the Week for the week ending April 20, 2003. The Spirit's all-time leading scorer and U.S. national team forward scored a goal and had an assist as the Spirit defeated New York. 2-0, at Mitchel Athletic Complex on April 19.

In Saturday's win at New York, MacMillan put the Spirit on the scoreboard in the 16th minute, running on to a nice pass from Aly Wagner to beat Power goalkeeper Carly Smolak with a low shot in the left corner. In the 28th minute, MacMillan found Julie Fleeting on a corner kick, and the Scottish forward hammered home a header for the goal. In the second half, MacMillan stepped up on the defensive end of the field when she slid across the goal line just in time to head an Emily Janss shot out of danger. The former University of Portland star finished the afternoon with all four of her shots on goal.

MacMillan previously won the league's weekly honor in the 2002 (April 22) and 2001 (May 7). MacMillan is expected to play two games in two days this weekend, as the U.S. takes on Nigeria at RFK Stadium on Saturday and San Diego hosts San Jose on Sunday.

MacMillan captured 41 points in the voting (17 first place, 7 second place) to defeat Washington's Siri Mullinix (28 pts.), Boston's Maren Meinert (15 pts.) and Spirit teammate Jaime Pagliarulo (3 pts.). The MET-Rx Player of the Week is selected every Monday throughout the regular season by a panel of journalists from the Professional Soccer Reporters Association.
