San Diego Spirit News Release
SAN DIEGO - Spirit forward Shannon MacMillan underwent successful surgery this afternoon at the Alvarado Outpatient Surgery Center to repair the torn anterior cruciate ligament in her right knee. Spirit team physician Dr. David Chao performed the procedure that took a graft from her right patellar tendon to replace the damaged ACL.
"The reconstructive surgery went well," said Dr. Chao. "She has a nice, tight graft and our treatment goals are going to be for her to maintain full extension and progress her to walking normally."
The damage to MacMillan's medial collateral ligament was mild (it will heal on its own) and the tear in her meniscus was small, meaning the amount of trauma on the knee was minor outside of the ACL tear. MacMillan crutched out of surgery center and is resting comfortably at her home. She will begin rehabilitation right away, which includes range of motion exercises with a progression to full weight bearing activities.
