San Diego Spirit Signs Two to Reserve Team

San Diego Spirit News Release

SAN DIEGO – Goalkeeper Shelley Finger, a four-time NCAA Champion, and defender Florence Omagbemi, the captain of the Nigerian National Team have rejoined the Spirit as members of the club's two-player reserve roster. With the signings, head coach Carlos Juarez has finalized his opening day roster for the upcoming 2002 WUSA season, which begins on April 13, 3:00 p.m. against the Carolina Courage at Torero Stadium.

Finger and Omagbemi were cut from the active roster last Monday, allowing Juarez to get to the league-mandated 18-player limit for the regular season. WUSA teams may carry two players on their reserve team, one of which must be a goalkeeper. The reserves will train every day with the active roster, but will not suit up for home games unless the active roster drops below 18 players due to injuries, national team call-ups or suspensions. They will not travel to road games unless the roster drops below 16 players. In Finger's case, a goalkeeper must be absent for her to suit up.

Finger, along with University of North Carolina teammates Mia Hamm, Kristine Lilly and Tisha Venturini-Hoch, is one of a handful of college players to win four national titles. She has played club soccer in Germany and also for San Diego WFC in the Women's Premier Soccer League. Omagbemi, one of the few players in the league who played in the 1991 Women's World Cup, is one of only a handful of players in the WUSA to have captained their countries in both an Olympics and a Women's World Cup.

The San Diego Spirit will kick off their second season on April 13 against the Carolina Courage. The Spirit will play their home matches at the renovated 7,035-seat Torero Stadium on the campus of the University of San Diego. Tickets for 2002 are now on sale.
