July 25, 2003 - Women's United Soccer Association (WUSA)
San Diego Spirit News Release

OPPONENTS' NOTES:

* Washington holds a 2-1-0 edge in the all-time series versus San Diego at RFK Stadium. San Diego has the worst road winning percentage in WUSA history (7-14-9, .383). Washington has won its last two matches at home.

* Mia Hamm is the only player in Washington history to record multiple goals and multiple assists versus San Diego during her career.

* Mullinix is one victory away from becoming the fourth 'keeper to record 20 wins during her career.

* Washington's Abby Wambach is the Freedom's all-time leading scorer versus the Spirit (4g, 1a, 9 pts. in four matches).

THE OUTLOOK

The Spirit and Freedom meet in a very important contest tonight with playoff implications, as both clubs have 25 points in the standings with three games remaining. The winner of the match will win the season series and will have a leg up on securing a postseason berth. San Diego has gone 1-1-1 in their last three starts, with their only win coming on July 16 against Washington in San Diego. The Spirit has had several opportunities in the past weeks to separate them from the rest of the pack, but have been unable to do so and now find themselves in the battle to make the playoffs. The teams meet again in the season finale in San Diego on August 9. With the absence of Shannon MacMillan, forwards Julie Fleeting and Christine Latham have stepped up to fill the team's scoring needs. On the defensive side, Jenni Branam has made the most of her seven starts in goal, becoming a reliable goalkeeper. Branam showcases one of the finest legs in the league, providing instant scoring chances for the Spirit.

SPIRIT QUICK SHOTS...A victory would:

* End a two-game winless streak.
* Give San Diego a two-game winning streak over Washington and the season series.
* Tie club record for wins in a season, 7.
* Tie club record for road wins, 3.
