San Diego Spirit Game Plan vs. San Jose

June 27, 2003 - Women's United Soccer Association (WUSA)
San Diego Spirit News Release

OPPONENTS' NOTES:

* The CyberRays snapped their four-game winless streak and the Carolina Courage's four-game unbeaten streak with a 2-0 victory Wednesday night.

* Pretinha's two assists against Carolina kept alive the streak of at least one of the CyberRays' Brazilians being involved (scoring or assisting) on every goal of 2003.

* Goalkeeper LaKeysia Beene recorded her WUSA-leading fourth shutout of the season Wednesday, lowering her goals-against average to 1.00, second best in the league to Atlanta's Brianna Scurry.

THE OUTLOOK

The Spirit face the San Jose CyberRays Sunday in the first game of a home-and-home series. The two teams met for the first time this season on April 27 with the Spirit coming away with a 2-1 win as a Kim Pickup flip-throw accounted for the winning goal. The CyberRays played that match without two of their Brazilians who were away on national team duty (Daniela was also with Brazil) and did not create too much danger against the Spirit. Katia and Pretinha will play Sunday, and when combined with Brazilian midfielder Sissi, the trio can cause problems for any team. While the CyberRays have had trouble scoring this season - 2002 WUSA leading scorer Katia had found the net just once as of press time - San Jose has played quality soccer this season and outplayed several teams only to have their finishing touch abandon them in losses. The CyberRays back line has been excellent with two U.S. National Team players - Brandi Chastain and Thori Byran - adding both experience and toughness. Those two players combined with former U.S. Olympian Michelle French, Australian international Dianne Alagich, veteran Keri Sanchez and the always physical Kelly Lindsey, makes the C-Rays back line one of the toughest to penetrate. The Spirit is looking forward to the game, as they will have their whole squad together after losing numerous key players to national team call-ups over the last few games. The Spirit has yet to lose a match this season when they have had all of their national team players - U.S. and foreign - available to play. While the Spirit has played well in almost every match, goals for a variety of players, instead of just Julie Fleeting and Julie Foudy, will make a big difference in a tightly packed playoff race.
