THE OUTLOOK
The Spirit, who has the league's longest unbeaten streak, takes on the Atlanta Beat for the first time at home this season after a 1-1 tie at Herndon Stadium on May 10. The Beat is perhaps the most talented team in the WUSA with national team players at almost every position. Still, Atlanta would not be doing as well had they not received an unexpected boost from Mexican international Maribel Dominguez, who is one of the leading scorers in the league early in the season. The crafty, shifty and speedy Dominguez scored her team's lone goal, albeit a soft one, in the draw between the two teams in Atlanta. The Beat throw two of the strongest players in the world at the Spirit in 5-foot-11 U.S. international Cindy Parlow, who is coming off a four-goal performance against England on May 17, and Canadian captain Charmaine Hooper, known throughout the league, and the world, for her aggressive play. The Beat also have two of the world's most creative midfielders in Japanese captain Homare Sawa and former U.S. Olympian Nikki Serlenga, a San Diego native. Both are remarkably skillful and can shoot and score from distance. In the back, the Beat has some rock-hard defenders in Canadian Sharolta Nonen, and Kylie Bivens, one of the best Americans not in the regular rotation for the U.S. Women's National Team. Bivens was suspended for the Beat's match last week after getting a red card the week before, but will be ready to go against the Spirit. In goal, the Beat has one of the world's best goalkeepers in U.S. international Briana Scurry, who has proved almost impossible to beat during the first two-plus WUSA seasons. Spirit forward Julie Fleeting managed a goal against her on a header in the 1-1 draw and the Spirit will be looking for more scoring from the Scottish international after losing Shannon MacMillan for the season to a knee injury.
