San Diego Spirit News Release

SAN DIEGO - National Council of Women's Organizations Chairperson Martha Burk, a leading advocate for the entry of women into the Augusta National Golf Club, will be the keynote speaker at a charity luncheon on Monday, March 3, 12:00 noon, to introduce a new women's sports organization. The new organization, co-founded by the San Diego Spirit and Pacific Women's Sports Foundation (PWSF), is dedicated to helping promote and advance the progress of women's sports in San Diego.

The name of the organization will be unveiled at the charity luncheon, which will be its first major event. Spirit general manager Dave Presher and PWSF director Jody Sims have been working on the joint project for several months and are excited about the prospects of bringing together the women's sports & business communities to help further the advancement of women's sports in San Diego.

"The synergy between our two organizations has been extraordinary in regards to the formation of this new and beneficial wing of the Pacific Women's Sports Foundation," said Presher. "Women's sports have arrived in this country, and particularly professionally in San Diego. However, we need a strong organization to continue developing avenues for young girls and women to participate both on and off the field to keep the momentum going forward."

Burk, who will be making her first Southern California appearance, is a dynamic speaker who will head an impressive list of orators for the event. Spirit captain and Title IX Commission member Julie Foudy will discuss the recent Title IX situation. Donna Fox, San Diego Sunfire women's professional football team owner, will give a brief overview of the Gridiron Girls program. Presher and Sims will also introduce and provide details of the new organization.

Proceeds from the charity luncheon will benefit the Girls Understanding Their Strengths (G.U.T.S.) program sponsored by the PWSF. G.U.T.S. is an after-school curriculum to help girls redefine a sense of self and a sense of power to make positive choices and to encourage greater participation in sports and physical activity. G.U.T.S. provides real solutions for girls at-risk in our most under-served communities. The program focuses on physical activity and sports; healthy eating; positive self image; role models; and self- expression. Girls learn teamwork, leadership skills, sportsmanship, confidence, and trust.

Tickets for the charity event, priced at $30 per plate (tickets are $40 at the door) or $300 for a table of 10 including a company sign and a donor list exposure, can be purchased by calling Jon Greene at 619-278-3186 or by emailing jgreene@sdspirit.com. The San Diego Spirit is a charter member of the WUSA and plays their home matches at the 7,035-seat Torero Stadium on the campus of the University of San Diego. The Spirit kicks off their third season of action on April 5, 2003, against the Boston Breakers. Kickoff is 6 p.m. PT.
