SAL Announces All-Star Teams

Kings Mountain, NC â John H. Moss, President of the South Atlantic League announced the teams for the 43rd Annual South Atlantic League All-Star Game to be played on Tuesday, June 18, 2002 at FirstEnergy Park in Lakewood, NJ. "The teams representing the Northern and Southern Divisions in the 2002 are full of great, young talent some of whom are destined to become future Major League Players and who will surely provide for a very exciting game in Lakewood," Moss said.
The Northern Division club will serve as the host team and will be managed by J.J. Cannon, who led the Lexington Legends to the 2001 South Atlantic League Championship. Jeff Manto, Field Manager of the host club Lakewood BlueClaws will provide assistance in his role as coach and Dave Schuler will be the team's pitching coach.
Lexington placed the most players on the Northern Squad with 5 including Manny Santillan, Ramon German, Charlton Jimerson, Ernnie Sinclair and Hector Gimenez. Hickory followed with 4 players consisting of Jeff Keppinger, Jose Bautista, Jeremy Harts and Vic Buttler. Five other Northern Division teams placed 3 players each (Greensboro, Delmarva, Kannapolis, Charleston, WV and Lakewood). The Northern Division team consists of 26 players total with a representative from each South Atlantic League Northern Division team.
The Southern Division club will be led by Joe Mikulik, the Field Manager of the Asheville Tourists who guided his club to the South Atlantic
League Southern Division Championship in 2001. Torey Lovullo, Field Manager for the Columbus RedStixx will serve as a coach for the Southern Division and Jim Bennett of the Asheville Tourists will be the club's pitching coach.
Asheville and Capital City tied with Lexington for placing the most players on a team with 5 as the Asheville Tourists are represented by Nick Gretz, Jayson Nix, Bryan Peck, Justin Hampson and Alvin Colina and the Capital City Bombers are represented by Justin Huber, Angel Pagan, Jeff Duncan, Blake McGinley and David Wright. The Macon Braves and Capital City Bombers placed 4 players each followed by Charleston, SC, Columbus and South Georgia with 3 representatives apiece. The Southern Division team consists of 26 players total with a representative from each South Atlantic League Southern Division team.
