Steve Begin named MVP
SAINT JOHN, NB. . .The Saint John Flames defeated the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins 1-0 in Game Six of the Calder Cup Finals to capture the American Hockey League's 65th Calder Cup Championship.
First year Head Coach Jim Playfair guided the club past the Portland Pirates (3-0), the Quebec Citadelles (4-1), the Providence Bruins (4-1) and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (4-2) en route to the franchise's first Calder Cup Championship.
Flames defenseman Darrel Scoville scored the Calder Cup winning goal on a power play with six seconds remaining in the second period and goaltender Martin Brochu turned aside 18 shots for his fourth shutout of Calder Cup 2001. Saint John finished the regular season with a franchise record 44 wins and 100 points.
Saint John left wing Steve Begin won the Jack Butterfield Trophy as the Calder Cup 2001 Playoff MVP. Flames Head Coach Jim Playfair said, "Begin was the ultimate warrior who paid the ultimate price and found a way to lead his team to victory."
A sold-out and franchise record crowd of 6,620 fans witnessed the crowning of the 65th Calder Cup Champion at Saint John's Harbour Station.
