Sacramento Republic FC News Release
Sacramento, Calif. - Republic FC closed out the 2023 regular season on Saturday night with a 1-0 victory over Eastern Conference side Miami FC. The win - the club's 18th of the season, moves the squad to 64 points at the end of the 34 game USL Championship regular season - good for second best in the league and the top of the Western Conference. The Indomitable Club now turns its attention to the 2023 USL Championship playoffs - which begin next week with the Conference Quarterfinal round.
After over an hour scoreless, Russell Cicerone's score mid-way through the second half put the Indomitable Club on top. The match made for a milestone night before a sellout crowd of 11,569 at Heart Health Park, as Republic FC claimed its 11th win at home this season - new club record, and finished the regular season with its most goals scored in a single campaign and fewest goals conceded.
The two sides went into the break deadlocked. Sacramento put pressure on their Florida visitors early, posting 11 shots in the first half. Russell Cicerone nearly put the Quails ahead in the opening minute, only to see a close-range attempt blocked. A high paced shot from Luis Felipe met the same fate in the 15th minute.
Rodrigo Lopez nearly opened his 2023 scoring account on a free kick mid-way through the first half. After Cicerone was taken down in the final third, the club's captain beat Miami's wall of defenders with a curler, just striking the bar.
Sacramento broke the scoreless tie with 20 minutes to go, when Nick Ross played a sweeping cross to Russell Cicerone crashing the net. The score marked the club's 51st of the 2023 campaign to set a new club record for goals scored in a single regular season, passing the 2019 squad's mark of 50 scored in league play. Cicerone finishes the regular season with 15 goals, making him the club's highest scorer in a single regular season since Cam Iwasa in 2019 and marking his third straight season with double digits.
The club held on defensively to secure yet another clean sheet with a stellar performance. The shutout - coming with Danny Vitiello between the sticks - makes the New York native the club's all-time shutouts leader with 22. With results from around the league, Vitiello leads the league's Golden Glove Award with the top goals against average mark of any keeper league-wide for the second time in his career.
Republic FC closes out the 2023 regular season atop the Western Conference with 64 points, and will host New Mexico United next Saturday in the Western Conference Quarterfinal at Heart Health Park. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m., and the match will be broadcast live on Antenna TV 40.2, FOX40.com and the FOX40 News Mobile App, and streaming on ESPN+. The following week, Republic FC will host a first-round playoff match at Heart Health Park. Tickets and more information are available at SacRepublicFC.com/playoffs.
