San Jose SaberCats News Release
SAN JOSE, Calif. - The SaberCats have announced that Omarr Smith will return to the franchise he played eight seasons for, this time as an Assistant Head Coach.
"Omarr has a lot of great history here in San Jose as a player. We are thrilled to have him back," said SaberCats Owner/Head Coach Darren Arbet. "With his experience as a player and a coach, he makes us a better team. He will help us to our ultimate goal of winning more championships"
Omarr Smith enters his fifth season coaching Arena Football, and his first with the San Jose SaberCats. This will be his 14th season of overall Arena Football experience.
For the past three seasons, the 2013 Assistant Coach of the Year had been the defensive coordinator for the Arizona Rattlers. Smith was the catalyst behind the defenses that surrendered the second least points per game in 2011, 2012 and 2013. In 2012 and 2013, he won his fifth and sixth career ArenaBowl Championships. Smith also coached the defensive backs for the Arkansas Twisters (af2) in 2009.
As a player, Smith spent nine seasons in the AFL, eight of them with the SaberCats. Smith was a key part in all three of the SaberCats ArenaBowl Championship seasons (2002, 2004 and 2007) and also won the ArenaBowl in his only season away from the Bay Area (2003 with the Tampa Bay Storm).
During his career, Smith racked up 35 interceptions, 88 pass breakups and eight defensive touchdowns. He perhaps had his best season during 2008, his last as a player, when he notched 115 tackles (102 solo), broke up 13 passes, grabbed three interceptions and recovered three fumbles.
Smith played college football at San Jose State University, where over his four year career picked off 13 passes for the Spartans.
