June 3, 2014 - Arena Football League (AFL)
San Jose SaberCats News Release
SAN JOSE, Calif. - The San Jose SaberCats announced today that they have acquired offensive lineman Duke Robinson from the Philadelphia Soul in exchange for defensive lineman Julius Williams and future considerations. The team also announced the activation of quarterback Nick Stephens from the other league exempt list and the placement of fullback Odie Armstrong on injured reserve.
"Duke is a big, physical lineman and Nick has all the tools to be a good quarterback in this league," said Owner and Head Coach Darren Arbet. "Both of these players will add depth and competition to our roster moving forward."
Robinson (6-4, 345, Oklahoma) is a two-year AFL veteran. After appearing in eight games for the Utah Blaze in 2013, Robinson appeared in eight contests this season for the Spokane Shock before being traded to Philadelphia, where he did not see any action. Before the AFL, Robinson was originally a fifth round draft pick of the Carolina Panthers in 2009. He spent 2009-2011 on the Panthers practice squad before signing with the practice squad of the Tennessee Titans. Robinson played his college football at the University of Oklahoma, where he was a two-time All-American and received All-Big 12 First-Team honors as a senior.
Stephens (6-3, 235, Tarleton State) did not appear in any games for Utah in 2013, and ventured to Salt Lake City following his time with the NFL's Tennessee Titans. He signed with the Titans as an undrafted free agent out of Tarleton State (Texas) in May of 2012 and appeared in two preseason games. After beginning his collegiate career with the Tennessee Volunteers, Stephens transferred to Tarleton State. He appeared in 19 games over two seasons for the Texans, completing 54.9% of his passes for 4,524 yards with 27 touchdowns. He also added five rushing scores as well. Prior to his transfer, he appeared in ten games over two seasons with Tennessee, throwing for 982 yards and eight touchdowns for the Vols.
The SaberCats are back in action this Saturday, June 7 at 7:30 pm at the SAP Center as the LA KISS come to town for the first time ever.
