Russo's Late-Game Heroics Lift Riveters over Boston for Dramatic First Win

Rebecca Russo's goal with three seconds left gave the Metropolitan Riveters their first win of the season, as they topped the Boston Pride, 3-2, on Saturday night at Warrior Ice Arena in Boston.
"I loved how we've played for a few weeks now, and I'm really glad to see our players rewarded with the win," said Riveters head coach Randy Velischek. "Great game. Both teams battling until the end. It feels really good to take that ride home with two points."
The goal was Russo's second tally of the night, as she opened the scoring 16:43 into the first period. Amanda Kessel found Russo at the back door to give the Riveters the 1-0 lead.
Kristin Lewicki had a pair of breakaway chances on the night, both saved by Katie Burt. The second came midway through the second period, and the Pride used a stretch pass after Burt's save to start a counterattack and even the score at one at the other end. Emily Field slid the puck through the slot to Jillian Dempsey, who buried it for her second of the season.
The Riveters then took advantage of a power play opportunity to regain the lead with 2:06 left in the second. A rebound popped out to the faceoff circle, and Chelsea Ziadie dropped in to fire it past Burt for her first professional goal.
Toni Ann Miano also netted her first NWHL goal, once again bringing the Pride even, as she shot into an open side of the net after a scramble in front 12:15 into the third period.
Russo's late-game heroics then gave the Riveters the win as she knocked in a puck at the back post. At the other end, Katie Fitzgerald finished with 35 saves for the Rivs. With the victory, the Rivs evened the season series with the Pride at one game apiece. The loss was Boston's first of the season.
The teams will now have a two-week break for the Four Nations Tournament. The Pride returns to action on Nov. 17, hosting the Buffalo Beauts at Warrior Ice Arena. The Riveters welcome the Connecticut Whale to RWJBarnabas Health Hockey House on Nov. 18. Tickets are available at NWHL.zone/tickets.
